Why Crying Isn't Sexy

Tears of sadness decrease sexual arousal in men.

Tears can occur when something is in one's eye or when one is sad. Tears also differ chemically. This crossover, blinded study explores whether emotionally induced tears convey chemosignals.

First, the investigators collected tears from women after they watched a sad film. The tears had no discernible odor compared with saline trickled down the women's faces ("trickled saline"). Then, the investigators tested whether sniffing tears influenced responses in men (mean age, 28). Twenty-four men sniffed fresh tears and trickled saline, and reported that the compounds did not differ in intensity, pleasantness, and familiarity. Then, a pad with one compound was pasted onto the upper lip of each participant. The men rated responses to emotionally ambiguous pictures of women's faces. Compared with saline, tears were associated with lower ratings of sexual attraction; sadness and empathy ratings did not differ. Fifty men watched a sad film after sniffing tears or saline. Tears reduced self-rated arousal, psychophysiological measures of arousal, and salivary testosterone levels. Sixteen men underwent functional magnetic resonance imaging while viewing sexually arousing pictures and movies; compared with saline, tears decreased activity in the hypothalamus and left fusiform gyrus.

Comment: These men were not aware that the compound consisted of women's tears, but it still affected the men's sexual attraction and arousal. Many questions are unanswered. Is this psychophysiological and sexual response gender-specific? Would it depend on the crier's or responder's mood, age, or menstrual phase? How would a child's tears affect the mother? What would be the response to tears from a patient who cries without sadness (e.g., pseudobulbar affect)? Perhaps in evolutionary terms, reproduction is untimely when a woman is tearful, and decreasing sexual attractiveness would be beneficial. Are there other benefits?
